Welcome to the NGO Committee on UNICEF
In 1949
the first steps toward a formal relationship between UNICEF and
NGOs was taken by the then Executive Director of UNICEF, Maurice
Pate. He established an Advisory Committee of International Non-Governmental
Organizations consisting of 13 organisations having consultative
status with ECOSOC. The function of the Committee was to promote
the work of UNICEF worldwide and also to examine UNICEF programmes
and their execution and give the necessary NGO input to the appropriate
UNICEF body. In 1952 the Advisory Committee changed its name to
the NGO Committee on UNICEF (NGOC).
The NGOC
today comprises of 80 members in over a 100 countries. The mandate
of the NGOC still remains the same and it continues to serve as
a voice for NGOs and the rest of civil society to UNICEF.
This site is designed to provide visitors with an introduction to
the NGO Committee on UNICEF and its work. It also provides formal
members of the NGO Committee with up-to-date information regarding
the progress of the Committee, Working Groups, and upcoming activities.
We encourage you to visit the site from time-to-time to review the
new activities and advancements of the NGO Committee to help improve
the lives of children globally, and its upcoming plans and priorities.
