Side Events

 

The NGO Committee on UNICEF hosted 2 major events at the December meetings.

One was a breakfast to celebrate the contributions made by :

H.E. Ambassador Lazarous Kapambwe as Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for leadership in promoting the rights and needs of the girl child in the Third Committee

 H. E. Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert for France 's outstanding leadership as Chair of the Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict since 2005 

Mr. Kul Gautam Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF, for his critical leadership on the Plan of Action, particularly on the occasion of the Special Session of the General Assembly on Children in 2002 and the follow up

Prof. Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro for his leadership in inaugurating the United Nations Secretary General's Study on Violence against Children

 

 

The second was a “side event” - Voices from the Regions sponsored by the NGO Committee on UNICEF during the UN World Fit For Children +5 held in December, 2008, regional representatives and youth shared their view of the pressing issues related to children. Tim Ekesa, Nairobi , Kenya , said that child protection and violence are the big issues in eastern and southern Africa . Young Moses, from the Rift-Valley Province of Kenya, emphasized the need for early education and help in eliminating childhood marriages. Nabil Seyidov, Baku , Azerbaijan , represents 20 national coalitions in the Regional Network for Children in CEE/CIS and Baltic States . He stated that most of the countries in the region lack social worker systems that could focus on children's issues. Elisabeth Shuman, Co-Chair of the NGO Committee on UNICEF chaired the session.
